- Kelvin Cooper robbed and set on fire at High Bridge Apartments
- Cooper dies from his injuries
- Police questioning three teens in the case
(Memphis 12/15/2009) 38-year-old Kelvin Cooper endured a pain few could imagine.
His burned out Nissan is a sign of the intense heat.
Cooper told police robbers put him in his car trunk, set him on fire and left him to die.
His family can’t make sense of it.
“A bad thing for anyone to have to go through, especially my family right now. So I just hope that anyone out there who knows anything will come forward and try to help us find the people that did this. It could be your family member.” says Kevin Gibson, Cooper’s cousin.
Kelvin Cooper was taken to The MED in critical condition.
Tuesday afternoon his family got the tragic news.
Kelvin Cooper had died.
Police are questioning three people.
Before he died, Cooper told police he had met up with a girl named Sharonda at some apartments. Then he was approached by two teenagers who robbed him of $250, forced him into his car trunk, poured gas on him and set him and the car on fire.
Witnesses put out the flames.
“I know at least 70-percent of his body was burned. All the skin was off his arms, hands, his whole face, everything.” says Jeffrey Rutherford, who tried to help Cooper.
Cooper’s family says he was a pastor at a church in West Point, Mississippi and plenty will feel the loss.
“He’s a great guy, pastor, fun person to be around. That’s why it’s so hard for me to comprehend why this happened to this guy because he never was bad person.” says Gibson.
Even though they had some suspects in for questioning, police had not made any arrests in this case by Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses say they saw three male teenagers near the High Bridge Apartments, in the area where the car was on fire.
Police may be talking to those teens.
And there is still the question of who was the woman that Cooper met and what does she know about all of this?
