(Memphis 10/9/2009) An accident at Winchester and Elvis Presley is not uncommon.

But an ambulance, on its side with airbags deployed was frightening site for onlookers.
It collided with a Dodge Ram pick up in the middle of the intersection of Elvis Presley and Winchester.

Inside the ambulance was a patient. Memphis Fire emergency workers pulled that patient, along with the two EMS workers and the driver of the truck from the wreckage.

“Initially, we got information that the passenger was critical, but she has since been upgraded to non critical, everybody else is non critical,” said Major James Richardson from Memphis Police.

Take a look at this light that flew off the ambulance when it toppled over, it was a private ambulance said to be transporting patient from a nursing home to dialysis.

Oxygen tanks and other emergency equipment littered the intersection.
Emergency Medical Health Care, the ambulance company, usually transports patients from hospital to hospital. Emergency workers say the ambulance likely did not have its lights and sirens on going through the intersection, because it wasn’t an emergency call.

Shaun Hemingway works at a dialysis center just north of the intersection.

“I see quite a few, an average a week, we see like 2 or 3 wrecks right here at Elvis Presley and Winchester,” said Hemingway.

His center was not where the patient was being transported. What caused the accident is unclear. Yet Hemingway believes this is a clear example of why people could be more careful coming through this area.

“Yellow lights, red lights, it doesn’t matter, if they are doing 45 to 50 coming through this intersection here and it’s ridiculous,” said Hemingway.

Police are investigating to find out what happened in the accident. Everyone inside is expected to be okay.
