Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: Westminster Academy vs. Immaculate Conception

Knowledge Bowl, Match 6: Westminster Academy Defenders vs. Immaculate Conception Wildcats. Aired December 5th, 2009.

Westminster Academy (Red)
Josh (Captain), Senior
Wil, Junior
D.J., Junior
Winston, Sophomore
Alternate: Graham

Immaculate Conception
Katie (Captain), Senior
Madeleine, Junior
Elana, Junior
Colleen, Junior
Alternate: Rachel

Results:
Round One: Westminster 60, Immaculate Conception 70
Round Two: Westminster 80, Immaculate Conception 70
Round Three/Lightning Round: Westminster 60, Immaculate Conception 30
Total: Westminster 200, Immaculate Conception 170

The Game: This was the tightest match since the FACS/Marion conflagration earlier this season. The score was tied going into the Lightning Round (each team capitalizing on 3 of 8 bonuses), and neither team really took control of the last round. The match decision probably came down to sheer volume as much as anything, with Westminster guessing 15 times in the final frame (and getting 6 right — four from D.J.) and Immaculate Conception ringing in only 9 times (and getting 3 right — all from captain Katie).

Mea maxima culpa: Translation: My bad, KB enthusiasts. Due to the confluence of deadlines at work and my strong desire to occasionally sleep, I’ve had to postpone getting up to my elbows in Knowledge Bowl these past few weeks. The past few weeks, I won’t say no man has ever been busier, I’ll just this man has never been busier. And I will say that if you wish to support to see the fruits of that labor, I encourage you to call the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce and request one of their annual magazines (just got them in this week) and/or buy MBQ magazine when it hits the newsstand on Jan. 1.

But my thoughts have never been far from my favorite dorks on the planet: KB participants and their loyal supporters and fans. And so it is with great joy that I dig back in to Knowledge Bowl coverage. Today: A day-night doubleheader, with St. George’s vs. CBHS and then Immaculate Conception vs. Westminster Academy under the lights. Look for another doubleheader next week, and then we’ll be caught back up.

Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: Hutchison Sting vs. Germantown Red Devils

Germantown (Blue team):
Rohit, Junior
Eric, Sophomore
Andrew, Sophomore
Jiaming, Junior
Alternate: Matt

Results:
Round One: Hutchison 50, Germantown 60
Round Two: Hutchison 110, Germantown 165
Round Three (Lightning Round): Hutchison 30, Germantown 30
Final: Hutchison 190, Germantown 255

Note: I’m on massive deadlines for a couple publications I edit, Germantown magazine and MBQ (Knowledge Bowl isn’t my only day job, you know), so this week’s recap’s going to be a little bit shorter — sweeter, I say — than usual and I’m also punting hard-core statistics for another week. I’ll make up for it word-count overload in a future post, I assure you.

The Game:
Like last week, we once again have an instance where the score was closer than it would’ve been because of missed bonus questions. I’m starting to think capitalizing on bonus questions is the most important facet of Knowledge Bowl victory. I’ll see what weighting statistics toward that hypothesis means for player ratings next week.

After round one, Hutchison was down by only 10, despite only getting 3 toss-ups correct versus 6 for Germantown. Round two saw the bonus-question-accuracy tilt in Germantown’s favor, as they got 5 of 7 bonuses correct in the second frame. Germantown entered the Lightning Round with a 65-point edge and played Hutchison to a draw in the third round to secure the victory.

Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: Marion Patriots vs. FACS Crusaders

Knowledge Bowl, Match 3: Marion Patriots vs. First Assembly Christian School Crusaders. Aired November 14, 2009.

Marion (Red Team):
Landon (Captain), Senior
Nicole, Junior
Raghib, Sophomore
Jonathan, Junior
Alternate: Sam, Junior

FACS (Blue Team):
Andrew (Captain), Freshman
Hannah, Junior
Zach, Junior
Megan, Senior
No alternate

Results:
Round One: Marion 55, FACS 80
Round Two: Marion 100, FACS 85
Round Three (Lightning Round): Marion 40, FACS 30
Tiebreaker: Marion 0, FACS 10
Final: Marion 195, FACS 205

Marion? Huh? According to the taping and broadcast schedules on the official Knowledge Bowl website, Match 3 was set to be FACS vs. Wooddale. For some reason, the team from Marion High School in Arkansas played against FACS. I can currently give no explanation. (Marion didn’t appear elsewhere in the tournament either, so I’m going to chalk it up to Wooddale being unable to play for some reason and Marion being the first alternate to fill in.)

The Game: The early moments of the game provided an answer for a hypothetical future KB FAQ. Marion rang in early and missed a question before they actually had any points, ostensibly accruing a five-point penalty. The scoreboard doesn’t tally negative points, so Marion had an understood -5 score.

This was confirmed after Marion’s first correct answer (Nicole: “Civil War”), when the scorekeeper posted Marion’s first sum as 5 instead of 10.

Round one was tighter than it should’ve been. Marion only answered two toss-ups correctly, but they did get the two bonuses. FACS, though it got 6 toss-ups correct, only cashed in on one bonus question.

The end of Round Two saw Marion within 10, setting up a tense finale. The Lightning Round was thrilling as promised, with Marion tying it up with 4 correct answers to FACS’ 3.

Host Jim Jaggers, unaware of the tie, was about to go to commercial when someone off-camera shouted, “No no no no no! Tiebreaker.”

Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: Bartlett Panthers vs. West Memphis Christian Black Knights

Knowledge Bowl, Match 2: Bartlett Panthers vs. West Memphis Christian Black Knights. Aired November 7th, 2009.

bartlett.jpg

Bartlett:
Casey (Captain), Senior
Davis, Senior
Macy, Senior
Chris, Junior
Alternate: Asher

West Memphis Christian:
Timothy (Captain), Senior
Braden, Senior
Shea, Junior
Michael, Junior
Alternate: Jonathan

Results:
Round One: Bartlett 130, WMC 30
Round Two: Bartlett 110, WMC 65
Round Three (Lightning Round): Bartlett: 10, WMC 10
Final: Bartlett 250, WMC 105

The Game: The only real tense moments in what was ultimately a pretty dominating game was about halfway through the second round. With the answer “Quadratic,” by West Memphis Christian’s Timothy, the Black Knights pulled the score to 130-100. Then Bartlett answered the next five correct toss-ups (and three bonuses) and put it out of reach for good.

Some might say there was a conspiracy afoot. West Memphis Christian reduces to WMC — the call letters for a TV rival to News Channel 3. Well, that was the kind of thing I thought about while scrawling out my voluminous notes for this first round match. I took two-and-a-half pages of notes, including every correct, incorrect, and bonus answer. I may not do that again, but I wasn’t sure at the time what info I might need for promised statistics. (See more, below.)

Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: Houston Mustangs vs. Kingsbury Falcons

Knowledge Bowl, Match 1: Houston Mustangs vs. Kingsbury Falcons. Aired October 31st, 2009.

Houston:
Sebastian (Captain), Senior
Daniel, Senior
Faith, Junior
Clayton, Senior
Alternate: Scott

Kingsbury:
Urica (Captain), Senior

Round One: Houston 170, Kingsbury 0
Round Two: Houston 160, Kingsbury 0
Round Three (Lightning Round): Houston: 80, Kingsbury 20
Final: Houston 410, Kingsbury 20

Kingsbury High School
  • Kingsbury High School

With the correct answer “The Battle of Britain,” given by Houston’s Sebastian, the 2Xrd season of Knowledge Bowl began. I say the 2Xrd, because there’s some mild confusion I’ll have to clear up tomorrow: A Channel 3 employee told me this was the 23rd season, in response to my inquiry last week. And yet, KB host Jim Jaggers opened his mini-monologue with the information that he had been told this was the 24th season. Controversy! I’ll have a definitive answer for you next week.

If you didn’t watch it, you might look at that score and think Houston dominated the game. You wouldn’t be wrong. But it’s worth noting that the Falcons seemed to have gotten shy after the first round. It’s one of the most underrated things about KB and, I presume, all TV game shows: the paralyzing fear and stage fright. I recall, before each of the three games I started back in 1993-94, waiting in the Channel 3 lobby for our turn on the stage, my overwhelming anxiety and how I had to excuse myself to the restroom. Too much information? Absolutely. I’ve never told anyone that before. But it’s wise to keep in mind that that’s the kind of stuff being experienced by the kids before and as the cameras roll. Respect.

Original Article: Knowledge Bowl: 2009-10 Season Preview

Tomorrow, Knowledge Bowl kicks off another season of local trivia competition. A staple of Memphis Saturday mornings on WREG News Channel 3 now about to start its 23rd year, Knowledge Bowl pits teams of area high school smartypants against each other, in tournament fashion, stretched out over the school year. Thirty-two high school teams start the season. One stands victorious in May. (This season’s final airs May 29, 2010.)

Across the Mid-South this fall, teams have been built at each participating school. One of the fun things about watching Knowledge Bowl is getting to meet these talented young adults, and, for the winners, seeing them grow and change throughout the season. The best of the best get more confident and comfortable on TV as the tournament progresses.

They don’t play for nuthin. Scholarships and bonds are given to every kid on every team, the amount increasing as the team advances. This year, each member on the winning team will get a $5,000 scholarship.

This year, consider SING ALL KINDS to be your Knowledge Bowl headquarters. We’ll be providing game-by-game analysis; absolutely nobody has requested such in-depth coverage, but if high school football can soak up so much time and devotion in the local media, ain’t it time for the nerds, geeks, cool-kids-who-are-also-smart, and every other brave soul who goes on the air to get their due? It’s way past time.

Original Article: Clooney! Memphis! TV!

Internationally acclaimed hottie George Clooney
  • Internationally acclaimed hottie George Clooney

The Hollywood Reporter is another-word-for-reporting that George Clooney is executive producing a greenlighted pilot called Delta Blues for the cable channel TNT.

From THR: “Delta, from Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures and Warner Horizon, was penned by Liz Garcia (Cold Case) and Josh Harto. It centers on an outstanding but unusual Memphis cop who moonlights as an Elvis impersonator and lives with his mother. Delta was put in development at TNT about a year and a half ago and was included in the cable network’s development slate during its May 2008 upfront presentation.”

George Clooney is, of course, Batman. No word at all about where the pilot will shoot, thought one suspects somewhere Memphis-y like Vancouver or Paraguay.

And there’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: Pau Gasol! MIami! TV!
